Weekend of January 15th/17th 2010: The third Birmingham UK FIDDLE HELL - a multitude of violinists of all styles and experience getting together for a weekend of fiddling. We hold workshops, try out gear, have performances, and most off all, talk to each other.  Fiddle Hells are unusual in that they are free (except for the Saturday evening) - just turn up, all players of all standards, styles and ages are welcome, there is very little fixed format, a couple of workshops, and some great players will be there.

Friday 5th February 2010: ROB LANE & FRIENDS

Local singer songwriter Robert Lane returns to The Tower of Song after a triumphant EP launch last October. Once again he is joined by fabulous guests including Sam Draisey, Simon Davies and comedian Lee Goodall.

In the main part of the night Robert will perform the songs from his EP Twenty Two plus some new and never heard before tracks, as well as covers of songs by some of his biggest influences. The evening will end with the return of the house band featuring Ken Stratford, Steve Butt and Garry (Gaz) Barham, who will rip it up with Robert at the end of the night. Terry Clarke has been active as a singer/songwriter on the Birmingham Jazz & Blues scene for several years and has now completed his second album of original material. Terry’s influences are extremely varied; from Chuck Berry to Mose Allison, taking in Louis Jordan, Hank Williams, Jimmy Witherspoon, Tom Waits and others too numerous to mention along the way! His live performances also feature covers of material from some of his favourite artistes.

It's been three years since the Tower of Song Bar opened. To show what's been happening and to start a new chapter in the Tower of Song Bar's story, this special night will featuring the art of Mike Browning (the artist behind the murals at the Tower) and the premiere screening of 'Ghost Writers....in the Sky' - the story of the Tower of Song Bar. Come along and celebrate local history in the making...copies of this DVD available on the night...just make a contribution to St Mary's Hospice and show the DVD to everyone you know.

Firmly established as one of the leading performers on the British acoustic blues circuit, Jim is also in demand as a guitar tutor. With twenty years teaching experience he regularly teaches on a one to one basis, runs festival workshops and for five years taught as a full time tutor at North Devon College. The workshop will cover finger style and slide playing, in standard and open  tunings. Jim's teaching style is always informative, easy-going and personal.

This time the local singer songwriter will introduce his brand new band, featuring the talents of Matty Pinfield on Drums, Simon Davies on Keys and Mick Jeynes on Bass.  A regular Crossroads Blues Club attendee, Robert has recently performed at The ForumLive area of The LG Arena, Birmingham, before concerts by Mark Knopfler and John Mayer. He formed the new band for a one-off gig in Bridgnorth, and had so much fun he’s decided to get them together again at his favourite venue.

   

The band will be playing Robert’s originals as well as a whole host of Blues covers and tracks by some of Robert’s biggest influences. Robert will be supported by the excellent Becky Rose, Worcester based Singer Songwriter and Pianist, and Singer Songwriter Brains for Breakfast. As on the previous two occasions, there will be no door entry but the hat will be passed around during the interval. It all kicks of at 9pm.

Steve Tilston wrote of her ‘Sarah’s talent is irrepressible. She sings and writes beautifully and her deft guitar work swings to buggery.’ High praise indeed from a true folk great!

Her albums have been praised by folk luminaries such as Bill Caddick, Clive Gregson and by Ric Saunders of Fairport Convention. She sings of life, love and the great beyond and she plays a mean guitar.

Rowena Knight will open the show. Ro is well known in the Midlands for her cutting edge songs.
